Consumer protection laws provide a mechanism of recovery for consumers of goods or services who were victims of fraud, deception, affirmative misrepresentations, excessive fees, or other unconscionable commercial practices.  New Jersey has one of the strongest consumer protection statutes, the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act, which provides for mandatory award of attorney’s fees and mandatory treble damages, if the merchant’s conduct in issue caused an ascertainable loss to the consumer.
